A router provides Internet connectivity to your local network while affording some protection for your network at the same time. The modem that you use to connect your office to the Internet has a different set of identifying numbers than the router. If you set your NetGear router to the same MAC address as your Arris modem, you can increase the security of your office network. This project requires accessing the NetGear administration page and modifying the router's MAC address manually.
1.
Access your Netgear router's administrative interface. Open a Web browser on a computer connected to the network services via the router and type 'http://192.168.1.1' (without quotes) in the address bar.
2.
Enter your administrator's password when prompted. The defaults out of the box are 'admin' and 'password.'
3.
Click on 'Basic Settings' and select 'Use This Computer's MAC Address.'
4.
Enter the MAC address of the Arris modem. This is either located on a slip in the modem's original packaging or on a sticker attached to the bottom of the modem.
5.
Click the 'Apply' button to save your settings. Close your browser, open it again, and return to the Arris modem administration screen. The MAC address should now be set to the new address you just entered.
